Two classic shapes for hard gel

Hard gel exists to freeze hair where you put it. Most people buy it for one of two shapes: tall spikes that stay up all day, or a flat slick back that stays back. Each shape needs a different amount of gel, a different hold number, and a different way of working the hair before the gel dries.

Building clean spikes on short hair

Spikes need short hair. Hair that runs long flops over under its own weight, no matter how much gel you squeeze out. Start with damp hair and rub a generous dollop between your palms. Work the gel right into the roots first. Lift the hair upward in small sections with your fingers while the gel is still wet. Squeeze each tip together to lock the point. A hold 10 or hold 9 formula locks spikes fast and holds them tall until you hit the shower.

Slick backs need a comb and less gel

A slick back needs less gel than a row of spikes. Take a smaller amount, spread it flat across both hands, and smooth it over the top and sides of damp hair. Take a fine comb and pull everything straight back from the forehead to the crown. The teeth distribute the gel evenly so hair lies flat without clumps. A hold 7 or hold 8 gel keeps the surface smooth, neat, and locked against the scalp all day without feeling stiff like concrete.

Fixing mistakes with a splash of water

Every gel we mix is water soluble. If a spike dries crooked or a comb line sits wrong, do not comb dry hair. Dry combing snaps the cast and leaves white flakes on your shirt. Splash a little tap water onto your hands and run them over the stiff section. The gel softens immediately. You can reshape the spike or pull the comb through again. Once the water dries off, the gel hardens back into place with the original hold intact.

Picking the format for your bathroom shelf

Gel comes in three formats depending on how you use it. A squeeze bottle comes in 7.05 or 11.99 ounces for fast daily use at the sink. A 9.52 ounce jar lets you scoop out large amounts with your fingers for tall spikes. Travel minis in 2.82 or 2.99 ounces fit inside a bag for touch ups on the road.
